Here's a story that should terrify anyone who depends on being found online.

Reddit just got erased from ChatGPT.

Not banned. Not penalized. Erased.

In August, Reddit's citations inside ChatGPT dropped 86%.

For years, if you asked ChatGPT a "what do people actually think about X" question...

Reddit was the source it pulled from. Constantly.

Then OpenAI changed how its search works.

And almost overnight, one of the biggest sites on the internet nearly disappeared from AI's answers.

No warning. No appeal. No phone call.

One company adjusted an algorithm, and another company's visibility fell off a cliff.

Now here's why this matters to YOU, even if you've never posted on Reddit.

We are entering the era where AI is the front door to information.

People don't scroll ten blue links anymore.

They ask ChatGPT, and they trust the three sources it decides to cite.

Which means a brand new kind of dependence just appeared.

Not "am I ranking on Google."

It's "am I one of the sources the AI chooses to mention."

And as Reddit just learned, that position can vanish between one update and the next.

You do not control the algorithm that decides if you exist.

So what do you actually do about it?

The same thing I've been preaching all along, now with a fresh reason.

The audience you OWN is the only audience nobody can algorithm away.

An email list doesn't get de-cited.

A phone number, a customer database, a community you run...

None of it disappears because OpenAI shipped an update on a Tuesday.

Reddit had 100 million daily users and still got humbled by one config change.

If it can happen to them, it can happen to whatever you're renting your reach from.

Build the thing they can't take.

Read that again. Not "AI made me faster."

"AI made me reliant, and I'm not sure I love it."

The reason is fascinating.

The natural stopping points in work used to be built in.

You'd hit a hard problem and need to think. You'd wait on a review. You'd get stuck and take a walk.

AI removed all of those pauses.

Now the work never naturally stops, so people don't either.

A separate survey found 45% of engineers are working MORE hours than last year, not fewer.

The tool that was supposed to free up your time quietly filled it back up.

Here's the takeaway, and it's a good one for a Wednesday.

AI should be a tool you pick up and put DOWN.

If it's become a thing you can't stop feeding, that's not leverage.

That's a treadmill with a nicer interface.

Use the AI. Then close the laptop.

The whole point was to buy back your time, not to work through the time it saved you. 🫡
