OpenAI just published its most ambitious public statement yet.

A joint post from Sam Altman and chief scientist Jakub Pachocki laying out where they think AI is going and what OpenAI's role in it should be.

The post opens with electricity reaching rural America in the 1920s.

The Three Goals

Anthropic just launched their biggest model yet.

What Makes It Different

The longer and more complex the task, the larger Fable 5's lead over previous Claude models.

Software engineering — Stripe reported Fable 5 compressed months of engineering into days. In a 50-million-line Ruby codebase, it completed a migration in one day that would have taken a whole team over two months by hand.

Knowledge work — highest score of any model on Hebbia's Finance Benchmark for senior-level reasoning. IMC reported it aced their trading-analysis evaluations nearly across the board.

Vision — new state of the art. Can extract precise numbers from detailed scientific figures. Rebuilt a web app's source code from screenshots alone. Beat Pokémon FireRed using only raw game screenshots with no helper tools.

Memory and long-context — stays focused across millions of tokens. File-based memory improved performance three times more than for Opus 4.8 in long-running tasks.

Drug design — using Mythos 5, internal protein design experts accelerated aspects of drug design by around ten times. The model executed all tasks normally completed by a scientist with no human assistance.

Novel scientific hypotheses — first model to consistently produce novel, compelling scientific hypotheses. Scientists preferred Mythos's molecular biology hypotheses around 80% of the time in blinded comparisons.

The Safeguards

Fable 5 launches with new safety classifiers for three areas.

Cybersecurity — when flagged, responses fall back to Claude Opus 4.8 instead. Users are informed when this happens. More than 95% of Fable sessions involve no fallback at all.

Biology and chemistry — same fallback approach for dual-use biology and chemistry queries until the trusted access program for researchers launches.

Distillation — requests flagged as attempts to extract Claude's capabilities to train competing models fall back to Opus 4.8.

External red-teaming organizations failed to find universal jailbreaks. One partner found Fable 5's cyber safeguards were the most robust of any model tested — zero harmful requests complied with across 30 different public jailbreak techniques.

June 23 onward — usage credits required until capacity scales enough to restore it as a standard subscription feature.
