OpenAI buried something inside its 20-plus DevDay announcements yesterday.

If you pay $200 a month for ChatGPT Pro, it's about you.

Here's what happened.

Three weeks ago I told you OpenAI might pause new Pro subscriptions because Astra demand was out of control.

They did pause them.

Yesterday, they reopened the $200 Pro plan.

With half the usage.

Pro used to give you 20 times the usage of Plus.

The reopened version gives you 10 times.

Same $200. Half the allowance.

OpenAI's product lead confirmed the change on X after the keynote.

Now, if you're already a Pro subscriber, here's your deadline.

You keep the old 20x allowance until October 29.

After that, you drop to 10x at the same price.

So you've got exactly one month on the old deal.

And above you, there's a new tier now.

Pro 500.

$500 a month, 25 times the usage of Plus, plus access to the new Ultrafast speed mode.

Read the shape of that.

The $200 plan got cut in half.

The $500 plan appeared right above it, with the usage you used to get for $200, plus a little more.

That's not a price increase.

That's a price increase wearing a new name.

OpenAI's CFO said the quiet part on CNBC.

When they launched the $200 plan, people thought the company had lost its mind.

Now customers are moving toward consumption-based spending.

Translation: they want you paying by the token, and the flat plans are getting squeezed until you do.

Here's your move, and it depends on what you actually use.

If you're a heavy Pro user, do the math on the next 30 days.

If you regularly burn past half your current allowance, October 29 is a real cliff for you.

Either budget for Pro 500, or route your heavy work through the API, where GPT-6.1 Sol just landed at one-fifth of Astra's token price.

If you're a light Pro user who never gets near the cap...

Honestly, 10x might still be plenty. Check your usage before you panic.

And if you were about to sign up for Pro fresh...

Know that you're buying the 10x version. The 20x deal is gone for new customers.

The lesson is the same one this summer taught over and over.

Flat plans are promotional.

Usage is the product.

Every "unlimited" tier eventually becomes a meter.

Don't build your workflow on an allowance that can be halved with a footnote. 🫡

The headline launch was Dots.

Always-on AI agents that live inside ChatGPT and keep working after you close the conversation.

Each dot gets its own cloud computer and its own browser.

You give it a goal, and it works toward it 24/7, connecting to more than 4,000 apps through plugins.

It's OpenAI's direct answer to Meta's Muse, which Altman called "a nice product" on stage.

So let's run it through the checklist, because I promised you no hype.

Availability. Dots are rolling out now to Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets, with an Enterprise beta an admin can switch on.

What it runs on. GPT-6 Astra. And notably, OpenAI withheld GPT-6.1 Astra on safety grounds, three days after pausing its frontier. So the newest Astra stays in the box while the agents ship on the current one.

Pricing. Included in those tiers, but OpenAI hasn't spelled out how much of your allowance each dot burns. After the Pro story above, watch that number closely when it's published.

Speed. There's a new paid tier called Ultrafast, up to eight times faster token generation in Codex and six times in the API.

Capability. The Agents API added computer use, so agents can now operate software to finish tasks, and GPT-6.1 Sol delivers near-Astra intelligence at a fifth of the token price for the repeated agent work.

Compatibility. This is the one that matters for a lot of you. OpenAI said you can now use your ChatGPT plan inside partner tools, and the list includes OpenClaw.

Yes, that OpenClaw.

So here's my verdict.

Dots are real, they're shipping, and the plumbing around them is genuinely impressive.

But everything I said about Muse two weeks ago applies word for word.

An always-on agent with its own computer and 4,000 app connections is an employee, not a feature.

Onboard it like one.

Small jobs first. Read before write. Draft before send.

And keep one eye on how fast it eats the allowance OpenAI just cut in half. 🫡
