Microsoft Passed. Google Didnโ€™t.

Yesterday I said Microsoft offering 60,000 people the door 48 hours before earnings wasnโ€™t a coincidence.

Last night the market agreed.

Hereโ€™s what happened.

Microsoft reported revenue of $92.3 billion, up 19%.

Azure grew 48% to $33.2 billion, the first time Microsoft has ever shown that number in dollars.

Free cash flow came in at $18.6 billion.

The stock rose 4% after hours.

Then Alphabet reported.

Revenue of $127.6 billion, up 25%.

Google Cloud more than doubled, up 103% to $30.7 billion.

Faster growth than Azure on every line.

The stock fell 10%. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Think about that.

Google grew faster and lost a tenth of its value in an hour.

Hereโ€™s why.

Alphabet spent $51.4 billion on capital expenditure in the quarter, up 114% from a year ago.

Free cash flow was negative $9.1 billion, the second quarter in a row below zero.

Search revenue came in under forecasts.

Google admitted AI Mode earns less per query so far.

An $8.7 billion loss on its equity stakes dragged earnings well below expectations.

Then came the line that did the damage: 2027 capital spending will โ€œincrease significantly.โ€

Translation: the bill isnโ€™t peaking.

Itโ€™s compounding.

Both companies said the same thing on their calls.

Demand for AI compute exceeds what they can supply.

The difference is how they paid for it.

Microsoft paid out of cash flow.

Alphabet paid with $28.7 billion of bonds and $12.4 billion of new shares.

Wall Street rewarded the company that cut 60,000 jobs and stayed cash positive.

It punished the company that grew faster and went into the red to do it. ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Let me explain what this means for you.

The two biggest AI vendors on earth just got graded on the same question every small business owner faces: are you spending on AI from profit, or from hope?

Microsoft got an A for spending from profit.

Google got sent home for spending from hope.

Speaking of spending from profit...

Halloween is Saturday.

The cheapest ad youโ€™ll run this year is the one where youโ€™re the star.

I put together a free walkthrough for making your own Halloween video ad with AI: clone yourself, add a scary co-star, and bring the whole scene to life.

Step by step, no film crew, no media budget.

Google spent $51 billion last quarter and lost 10%.

You can spend an afternoon and post it by Friday. ๐Ÿ˜

Did You Know?

Googleโ€™s 2004 IPO raised $1.67 billion at a $23 billion valuation.

It used a Dutch auction that Wall Street hated.

Last quarterโ€™s capital spending alone was $51.4 billion.

In one quarter Google now spends more than twice what the entire company was worth on the day it listed. ๐Ÿ˜‚

The ice cream shop that makes money when it's cold

28 Wishes sells ice cream in Los Angeles. Below 70ยฐF, sales fall about 20%. The weather is out of their hands. Rent isn't.

So the owners started putting about $20 a day into Kalshi weather markets, taking the cold side. The days that keep customers away now pay something back.

This is hedging. Big companies have done it for decades, buying protection against bad weather, fuel spikes and rising rates. It used to take a broker, a trading desk, and an order size no corner shop could meet.

Kalshi opens it up. Contracts on weather, fuel prices, inflation, tariffs and regulation, starting at a few dollars. Take a position on the outcome that would hurt you. If it hits, the payout softens it. If it doesn't, the contract expires and the good month was the point.

Google launched another Gemini model you canโ€™t use.

Reuters reports Gemini 4 Carbon arrived Wednesday with a cybersecurity focus, restricted to vetted defenders.

Google says it scored 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro, a test of whether AI can find real software vulnerabilities.

It scored 71% on CWE-bench, which tests whether it can write working fixes.

Hereโ€™s why that sounds familiar.

Four weeks ago Google announced Gemini 4 Argon and locked it behind its Fairwind programme for two weeks before paying customers got it.

Argon scored 68% on the same CWE-bench.

Google says Carbon writes secure code at more than twice Argonโ€™s success rate.

For now itโ€™s just as hard to get.

Hereโ€™s the pattern.

Black October gave us PHP2Shell and Node2Shell, both found by AI, both patched in a scramble.

Googleโ€™s answer is a model trained to find the next one, handed only to the people whose job is closing doors rather than opening them.

Whether the public gets Carbon in two weeks like Argon, or never, Google hasnโ€™t said. ๐Ÿ‘€

Over to You...

Look at your AI spend this month and ask one question: is it coming out of profit or out of hope?

If the answer is hope, you just failed the test Google failed last night. ๐Ÿ”ฅ
