Six Checks Before You Switch

.Opus 5 is reportedly dropping TODAY.

Maybe this hour. Maybe Monday. Maybe not at all...

Because Anthropic still hasn't said a word.

Here's what's actually confirmed as of this morning:

✅ A mystery model called "Honeycomb EAP" appeared in Cursor's model picker... And got pulled within hours

✅ A claude-opus-5 string surfaced in Google's Vertex catalog

✅ Partners are visibly prepping for a rollout

❌ Official announcement... Nothing

❌ API model ID... Nothing

❌ Pricing, system card, launch date... Nothing

Meanwhile deployment trackers spent yesterday claiming it's "rolling out across providers"...

While Anthropic's newsroom sat silent. 😅

The rumored July 20-21 window already came and went.

Gemini 3.5 Pro. Three missed dates. Still missing.

Opus 5. Two slipped windows and counting.

Launch hype has officially decoupled from launches.

So here's the move... And it applies to EVERY model launch, forever.

When Opus 5 actually drops, I'm checking exactly six things before anything changes in my stack:

1️⃣ The official model ID and API availability
2️⃣ Context window and maximum output
3️⃣ Input and output pricing
4️⃣ Speed, latency, and rate limits
5️⃣ Coding and long-running agent performance
6️⃣ Tool compatibility and migration requirements

Then I test it against work I ALREADY do...

Same tasks. Same quality checks. Same cost limits.

And I move ONLY the work where it wins clearly.

A new model name doesn't mean your workflow should move.

The launch-day rebuilders lose a week every single release...

The testers upgrade only when it pays. 🫡
