The AI summit answer in six words

Warm Words, No Brakes

I promised you the summit results.

Here they are, straight from the President's own post before the meeting even started.

"I want to leave it exactly where it is."

That was the entire American position on AI going into the room.

And he added the kicker.

"That is China's position also."

So let's grade Wednesday's scorecard, because you deserve honesty, not spin.

The incident hotline.

Xi called for the two sides to keep their AI dialogue going, exchange views on risks, and work together to prevent misuse.

That keeps the door open. It's not a signed hotline.

Call it a maybe.

The chips.

Export controls on advanced Nvidia hardware stayed exactly where they were.

Unresolved.

Distillation.

Not a word in the readouts.

Unresolved.

The money.

Both sides are still building as fast as physically possible.

Unchanged.

And the big one, guardrails.

Bloomberg's headline said it cleanly. No moves toward AI guardrails.

Trump's own framing was even clearer.

"Our guardrail is the DOJ!"

Read that one carefully, because it's the most important sentence of the week.

The American answer to AI safety is not rules before something goes wrong.

It's prosecution after.

That's a very different world from the one Amodei asked for two weeks ago.

Pacing, evaluators, coordination, all of it got answered with "we'll see you in court if it breaks."

So what did the summit actually produce?

A trade truce extended.

A lot of warm words about a "constructive relationship."

One genuinely important line from Xi, that humans must stay in control of the technology.

And a shared agreement between the two most powerful men on Earth on exactly one AI question.

Keep going.

Here's what that means for YOU.

I've said this all summer, and this week the presidents confirmed it in writing.

Nobody upstairs is going to slow this down.

The tools keep getting faster and cheaper every week, and you saw that Thursday.

The rules, when they arrive, will arrive as lawsuits and investigations, not as guidance.

Which means the liability lands on the operator.

On you.

The careful builders will be fine, because when the DOJ is the guardrail, the people with scopes, logs, and oversight have nothing to explain.

The reckless ones will be the case studies.

There's just the question a prosecutor asks after the damage.

If your answer is "I scoped the access, I logged every action, I had a human checkpoint, and here are the records"...

You're a footnote.

If your answer is "I gave it everything and walked away"...

You're the headline.

Neither one will manage your agents for you.
