Gemini’s Builders Say Google Can’t See Where It Goes

Two Google DeepMind researchers quit this month.
They told the BBC why.
Here’s what happened.
Sofia Liguori joined DeepMind in 2023 to work on routing power through electrical grids.
Peacetime engineering.
In April Google announced a classified AI contract with the Pentagon.
The next day she stopped working.
She burned sick leave and holiday to avoid touching it.
This week she resigned.
Her words to the BBC: realising her company is pushing AI into military operations makes her ashamed to work there.
Andreas Kirsch, an AI researcher, left earlier in October.
His version is the one that should bother every business owner reading this.
“Google seems to have no right to control or veto how the Pentagon uses its AI.”
He added that Google has limited visibility into how it’s being deployed.
Current models, in his view, aren’t robust enough for the battlefield. 😳
Say that out loud.
The company that builds the model says it can’t see what the customer does with it.
Google’s response to the BBC: it follows a consistent process for public-sector contracts, including compliance with its acceptable-use policies and AI principles.
Those principles are worth a closer look.
In February 2025 Google deleted its promise not to build AI for weapons or surveillance.
In June safety researcher Alex Turner quit after a 25-page oversight proposal, backed by 250 colleagues, went nowhere.
Around 300 UK DeepMind staff have been trying to unionise over the same contracts.
Liguori says internal posts of hers were deleted for containing the word “genocide.”
And she told the BBC her employment contract bars her from criticising Google for the rest of her life.
Speaking of everyone else...
Google isn’t alone in the room.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said in January the US will become an “AI-first” warfighting force.
OpenAI, Amazon, Microsoft, SpaceX, Oracle, Nvidia and Reflection signed similar contracts this year.
An OpenAI robotics lead resigned in March over the same thing.
Let me explain why this matters to you.
Strip out the Pentagon and the question is the one every business signing an AI vendor contract should be asking.
Once the model is deployed, who can see what it’s doing, and who can pull the plug?
If the lab that built Gemini can’t answer that about its biggest customer, your vendor can’t answer it about you.
Somebody has to read the contract, find the clause that says “any lawful purpose,” and ask what happens on the day that stops being enough.
Nobody at Google did. 👀
Did You Know?
In 2018 about 4,000 Google employees signed a petition against Project Maven, a Pentagon drone-imaging contract.
A dozen resigned.
Google dropped the contract and published AI principles promising never to build weapons.
Seven years later it deleted the promise.
This time the resignations come with an NDA. 😏

Patch your website today.
Yesterday the PHP Foundation shipped an emergency fix and told the world to install it or take their sites offline.
PHP runs WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and Wikipedia, about 70% of all websites.
Two critical flaws, nicknamed PHP2Shell, let an attacker run code on your server without logging in.
Severity: 9.2 out of 10.
Every PHP version going back a decade is affected.
Here’s why it’s in this newsletter.
AI found it.
Two security firms, Calif and Wiz, discovered the flaws independently.
Calif used OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol.
Wiz says the bugs sat there for decades because proving them exploitable was at the edge of what humans could do.
A frontier model collapsed that barrier. 🤯
Tuesday I told you a hacker’s agents broke into 100 stores at $50 each.
Today the door they were hunting for has a name and a public write-up.
Tech firms say hackers are already using it.
Cyber agencies in the UK, Europe, Australia and Japan told operators to patch now or go dark.
The Dutch government’s citizen portal went offline.
The Dutch cyber agency took itself down as a precaution.
Archive.org went dark.
What to do, in ten minutes:
Find your PHP version in your host’s control panel, or ask them.
The fixed versions are 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35.
On anything older than 8.2, there’s no patch, only an upgrade.
On managed WordPress hosting, email support today and ask: “Are we patched for PHP2Shell?”
If they can’t answer by tonight, consider taking the site offline until they can.
😂Meme of the Day

Over to You...
Check your PHP version before you close this email.
If you have to think about it, the agent already knows the answer. 🔥
