OpenAI drops macOS app

Hi ,
Codex now has a native macOS app.
OpenAI's agentic coding tool works with multiple AI agents in parallel. Set automations to run in the background on schedules. Review results when you return.
Built on GPT-5.2-Codex, their most powerful coding model.
Available now on macOS.
This is OpenAI catching up to Claude Code and Cowork.
But first, today's client targeting framework and all-in-one creative tool (then see what Codex's new app means for AI coding...)

OpenAI Launches macOS App for Codex Agentic Coding
OpenAI announced a new macOS app for Codex, its agentic coding tool.
The app integrates multiple agents working in parallel with background automations and agent skills.
Available now on macOS.
What Changed
Codex started as a command-line tool in April 2025, expanded to web interface in May 2025.
Now it's a native macOS app with agentic capabilities.
The app works with multiple AI agents simultaneously. Agents run independently on coding tasks without constant human oversight.
Set automations to run in the background on automatic schedules. Results get placed in a queue for review when you return.
Select different agent personalities—from pragmatic to empathetic—depending on your working style.
The Model Behind It
Built on GPT-5.2-Codex, OpenAI's most powerful coding model.
Launched less than two months ago.
CEO Sam Altman: "If you really want to do sophisticated work on something complex, 5.2 is the strongest model by far. However, it's been harder to use, so taking that level of model capability and putting it in a more flexible interface, we think is going to matter quite a bit."
Performance Context
GPT-5.2 holds the top spot on TerminalBench, which measures how well AI handles command-line programming tasks.
But agents from Gemini 3 and Claude Opus logged roughly equivalent scores—lower, but within margin of error.
SWE-bench results (tests AI's ability to fix real-world software bugs) show no clear advantage for GPT-5.2.
Agentic use cases are difficult to benchmark effectively. State-of-the-art models can vary significantly in user experience even with similar benchmark scores.
Why OpenAI Built This
Agentic software development has become the trend—epitomized by Claude Code and Cowork apps.
OpenAI has been gradually building Codex but needed to catch up to competitors on the agentic interface.
The company hopes GPT-5.2-Codex combined with the new app will tempt Claude Code users to switch.
The Speed Claim
Altman: "You can use this from a clean sheet of paper, brand new, to make a really quite sophisticated piece of software in a few hours. As fast as I can type in new ideas, that is the limit of what can get built."
This positions Codex as a rapid prototyping tool, not just a coding assistant.
Why This Matters
AI coding tools are converging on similar features: multi-agent systems, background automation, agent personalities, agentic workflows.
The differentiation comes down to: Which model performs best in practice? Which interface feels most productive? Which integrates best with existing workflows?
OpenAI launching a macOS app signals they're taking the agentic coding space seriously after competitors (Anthropic with Claude Code and Cowork) moved faster.
For developers, this means more options. GPT-5.2 may work better for some use cases. Claude Opus for others. Gemini 3 for others still.
For OpenAI, this is about not losing ground in a category (developer tools) where they were early but got passed by competitors on user experience.
What This Means
If you're coding with AI, you now have native macOS apps from both OpenAI (Codex) and Anthropic (Claude Code).
If you're evaluating which to use, benchmark scores don't tell the full story. Try both and see which feels more productive for your workflow.
If you're already using Claude Code, OpenAI is betting GPT-5.2's power combined with the new interface is worth switching.
The agentic coding category is heating up. Expect more features, better models, and tighter integrations as companies compete.
