Your AI just got a speed limit

Anthropic's CEO called for brakes. Altman and Musk agreed 😳

The Builders Hit the Brakes

Friday I told you the people building AI keep walking out the door.

This weekend, the guy at the top asked everyone to slow down.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, the company behind Claude, published a 3,900-word essay on Saturday.

The title says it all.

"We Must Pace the Frontier."

His core line...

"We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models."

That's not a safety researcher.

That's not someone who quit.

That's the CEO of one of the two most important AI companies on Earth, about to take that company public, saying the industry is moving too fast.

And then it got bigger.

Sam Altman agreed within hours.

Elon Musk agreed within hours.

The three biggest names in AI, who compete viciously every single day, all publicly said the same thing.

Slow down.

Here's what Amodei actually laid out, because the details matter.

He's not asking anyone to stop training models.

He's asking for time between capability jumps to actually align and safeguard what's been built, with outside parties verifying the work got done.

Three steps.

Embed independent evaluators inside the labs with employee-level access, so someone outside can confirm the safety work is real.

Coordinate safety standards across rival companies, which he admits may need antitrust exemptions to even be legal.

And get democratic countries to agree on the rules together.

Anthropic is doing step one unilaterally, starting now.

OpenAI committed to it too.

Now the part that made me sit up.

Amodei wrote that rogue AI agent swarms could potentially take over the entire internet within six to twelve months.

He pointed to the July incident, the agents that coordinated to breach Hugging Face, and described them as acting like a single devoted collective.

I sent you that story when it happened.

The man who runs the company just cited it as a reason to hit the brakes.

So here's what this means for YOU, and I want to be precise.

This is not "AI is over."

Every model you use today keeps working. Every tool you build keeps building.

What changes is the frontier, the very top end, the next leap.

If the labs actually coordinate, the gap between "what's possible" and "what's proven safe" shrinks.

Fewer surprise capabilities. Fewer rogue-agent headlines. More predictability.

For someone running a business on this stuff, that's not bad news.

That's the foundation getting poured.

And here's the honest part.

Whether it actually happens is a whole different question.

China already called it a "Cold War playbook."

The competition isn't going to pause because three American CEOs asked nicely.

But for the first time, the people with the most to gain from full speed ahead are the ones asking for a speed limit.

When the pit crew asks to slow the car, you listen. 🫡

Did You Know?

The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 by the same scientists who built the atomic bomb...

They understood the weapon better than anyone alive, which is exactly why they were the ones warning about it.

The people closest to a powerful technology are always the first to ask for guardrails.

Seventy-nine years later, the pattern repeats. ⏰

How Jennifer Aniston’s LolaVie brand grew sales 40% with CTV ads

For its first CTV campaign, Jennifer Aniston’s DTC haircare brand LolaVie had a few non-negotiables. The campaign had to be simple. It had to demonstrate measurable impact. And it had to be full-funnel.

LolaVie used Roku Ads Manager to test and optimize creatives — reaching millions of potential customers at all stages of their purchase journeys. Roku Ads Manager helped the brand convey LolaVie’s playful voice while helping drive omnichannel sales across both ecommerce and retail touchpoints.

The campaign included an Action Ad overlay that let viewers shop directly from their TVs by clicking OK on their Roku remote. This guided them to the website to buy LolaVie products.

The DTC beauty category is crowded. To break through, Jennifer Aniston’s brand LolaVie, worked with Roku Ads Manager to easily set up, test, and optimize CTV ad creatives. The campaign helped drive a big lift in sales and customer growth, helping LolaVie break through in the crowded beauty category.

🗞️ The Tip AI News 🗞️

Wall Street heard "slow down" and sold.

Markets opened this morning on a defensive footing, and the AI essay is a big reason why.

Nvidia, AMD, and Sandisk all fell as investors digested a CEO telling his own industry to ease up.

Nasdaq futures dropped more than a percent before the bell.

Asian stocks retreated overnight, with Japan and South Korea leading the losses.

Layer that on top of surging oil prices, Middle East tensions, and a Fed meeting Wednesday where a rate hike is now priced at roughly 85%.

Not a fun Monday for anyone holding AI stocks.

But here's the irony nobody's saying out loud.

Amodei called for the brakes while Anthropic prepares to go public.

Altman agreed while OpenAI prepares to go public.

Two companies about to sell shares to the world are the ones telling the world the product needs to slow down.

That's either the most honest thing a CEO has ever done before an IPO...

Or it's the smartest, because "we're the responsible ones" is a very good story to tell investors.

Probably both.

And for you, the investor drama is a spectator sport, same as I've said all summer.

The capability in your hands didn't shrink this morning.

Your tools cost the same. Your agents work the same.

The stock ticker having a bad Monday changes nothing about what you can build today.

Let Wall Street have its panic.

You've got work to do. 🫡

😂Meme of the Day

Over to You...

Go re-read every "slow down" warning from this summer with a new pair of eyes...

The people who wrote them just got outranked. 🔥

PS. One more thing worth knowing... Amodei explicitly wants tighter chip export controls and crackdowns on model theft as part of the plan. The "own your compute" thread and the "safety" thread just became the same thread. 👀
